Rohit Bal’s collaborative collection, “Husn-e-Taa’iraat” (birds of paradise) bears the same name as his couture collection last year and is a theme that has consistently inspired the designer. The collection features floral designs and birds of paradise as large earrings, completely embellished with Swarovski crystals.

Bal chose opaque and dark toned crystals for his collection in order to create a more vintage inspired look.

“Swarovski is always seen as modern-age bling,” Bal told Elle India. “Its designs are young and sharp; I wanted to steer away from that. I wanted to give it a new twist. And when it came to finding inspiration, I knew it had to be flora and fauna. They have been a part of my collections for many years, and justify the vintage look I want to achieve. The idea was to create something that you will find in your grandmother’s closet.”

Bal used a patina technique to oxidise the metal used in the earrings to get a vintage look as well as a snow setting technique where different shaped stones are put together so that they almost completely cover the base. This can be seen on the Birds bodies and on flower petals. Bal took a year to create the collection with Swarovski and has said that he would be open to more collaborative collections in the future.

Swarovski Confluence has partnered with a number of Indian designers for capsule collections including Nimai, Nida Mahmood, and Eina Ahluwalia. Founded in September 2016, the business uses Swarovski crystals exclusively and is based in India.
