Robinsons to bring Indian designers to Dubai with "Atelier India" project

The Singapore-based department store business Robinsons opened a retail outlet in the UAE’s Dubai Festival City last year and has brought a host of Indian designers to the Middle East with its new project, “Atelier India”.

A dedicated space within Robinson’s Dubai department store is currently dedicated to Indian fashion from September 27 to October 20. The “Atelier India” project has brought over designs by Raghavendra Rathore, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Shantanu & Nikhil, and Rohit Bal and was curated by Robinsons’ Middle East General Manager, Adosh Sharma.

“There is a lacuna among premium department stores in addressing the paradigm shift in the lifestyle of Indian diaspora in the region,” Sharma told Vogue India. “The fact is, there is a huge audience for Indian fashion among Indians, Pakistanis and Emiratis… Indian designers are a potent force, they are creating waves in the West and it is time to showcase them differently.”

The exhibition has been curated to suit the taste of Dubai’s diverse shoppers including Arabs, Indians, Pakistanis, and Europeans. The exhibition, which launched with a fashion show at InterContinental Hotel in Dubai on September 27, sees the designers reimagine some of their latest collection’s designs to suit this market.

Sharma stated that, although the project started as a promotion for the upcoming Diwali festival, more could come of it as Indian designers are in demand in the region but often find it challenging to secure permanent retail spaces.
