Ritu Kumar shares her fashion design story on Different Strokes
A weekly show by the Hindustan Times, Different Strokes, dived into Kumar’s long fashion design career that began in the 1970s. Kumar shared her challenges in the industry in the 1970s as well as how she introduced “boutique” culture to India with her brand “Ritu”.
Kumar was also a big part of the famous 1994 Miss India contest that saw Sushmita Sen and Aishwarya Rai compete, with Sen then going on to win the title and later the Miss Universe title. Kumar spoke about how, after the pageant, she consistently styled the two Bollywood celebrities who have gone on to become some of India’s best known style-icons.
At the end of last month, Kumar was given a lifetime achievement award by Vogue India. The award was presented at Vogue India’s Women of the Year awards. Kumar celebrated half a century in fashion this year and co-curated an exhibition on her career that opened in March and was entitled “Crossroads: Textile Journeys with Ritu Kumar”.
Kumar’s latest collection for autumn/ winter 2018 is currently being marketed as “Diwali with Ritu Kumar”. Kumar has created an eveningwear collection specifically for the holiday season that features Chanderi and velvets and the collection has been endorsed by both Sukhneet Wadhwa and Bahaar Dhawan Rohatgi.
