Taking place at the Lodhi in New Delhi from November 23 to 25, Nayaab is a fashion exhibition that aims to showcase the textile crafts of India. This will be the fifth edition of the exhibition and, this season, Ritu Kumar will make her debut there and present an exclusive collection at the event.

“This is our first time being a part of Nayaab,” said Kumar. Of her collection, Kumar said: “The most significant would be the Ri signature and The Parikrama collection. Ri is visually nostalgic yet thoroughly progressive in its construction.” Known for her traditional wear, Kumar will be showcasing a contemporary collection at the exhibition, in line with Apparao and Sood’s desire for designers to think outside the box with their use of traditional weaves.

Speaking about the exhibition, Sharan Apparao said: “Nayaab strives for excellence and believes in celebrating the finest of Indian weaves by curating and showcasing the wonders of Indian textiles. Each piece will highlight the intricacy and skill of the designer. The objective of the show is to not just showcase trends in Indian textiles, with a carefully edited collection, but also moving the crafts of textiles beyond fashion to the space of art and authorship.”

Traditional weaves have had somewhat of a renaissance in India this year with more and more designers using sustainable weaves in place of other textiles. Where once traditional weaves were mostly only seen in traditional wear, they are now used for myriad design styles, something the government is also promoting with their “Make in India” campaign.
