From December 12 to 13, Ritu Kumar showcased textiles that she has collected for the past half century in her flagship store in the capital, the designer announced on Facebook. The exhibition was titled “Kanaat” which in an Urdu term for a textile panel, often hand painted or hand printed.

Kumar’s textile collection showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the weaves and how they have inspired printed textiles across the Indian subcontinent and even in Europe. The exhibition, which was also curated by Kumar, featured scenography and text by Mayank Mansingh Kaul.

Alongside the exhibition, Kumar launched a collection of home furnishings inspired by the historical textile designs on December 12 which will remain on display in-store. With rich textiles and nostalgic prints, the collection mixes the Kanaat tradition with Kumar’s own aesthetics.

Ritu Kumar launched her eponymous brand in 1969 and has become known for her championing of Indian heritage textiles. Kumar runs four labels: Ritu Kumar, Label Ritu Kumar, Ri Ritu Kumar, and new line Ritu Kumar Home.
