The Retailers Association of India has launched an online ‘Talent Exchange’ to enable retailers still conducting business to hire unemployed workers to ensure the supply of essential goods during lockdown.

The RAI’s Talent Exchange has launched as an online directory of businesses requiring workers. Fast moving consumer goods businesses can list the number of employees they need to hire on a temporary or permanent basis and can be linked with workers. Many businesses have found that they require more staff due to an increase in online grocery deliveries.

“We have hired close to 2,000 people this month itself,” Grofers’ head of supply chain Rohit Sharma told ET Retail. “We are hiring from wherever we are getting them from, including from other retailers whose stores and warehouses are fully or partly shut.”

Grofers has hired around 200 employees from apparel exporter Orient Crafts, ET Retail reported. India’s jewellery, apparel, and textile industries have witnessed large numbers of workers temporarily and permanently laid off as businesses struggle with halted cash flow. Restaurants have also had to lay-off staff as they remain closed under lockdown and some of these workers have gone to work for FMCG retailers.

The RAI will hold a seminar on April 17 on the impact of Covid-19 on the fashion industry which will be moderated by LVMH Group’s L Catterton Asia consultant and senior advisory board member Bijou Kurien. The organisation has already held a number of digital seminars and discussed the textile industry in an online talk on April 13.
