The Retailers Association of India has created nine sets of health and safety guidelines for specific retail sectors including apparel, footwear, and jewellery stores to encourage businesses to reopen safely.

The RAI has published downloadable guideline booklets on its website for categories: ‘Beauty and Wellness’, ‘Jewellery and Watches’, ‘Apparel Retail’, ‘Footwear Retail’, ‘Restaurants’, ‘Consumer Durables’, ‘Food and Grocery Retail’, ‘Workplace’, and ‘Shopping Centres’. The guidelines are designed to offer tailored solutions for safe shopping during the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

Each set of guidelines has sector-specific suggestions. For example, the RAI’s footwear retail guidelines include providing customers with disposable socks when trying on footwear and limiting shoe trials to two or three pairs per person. Infographics are also included to show to clean and sanitise stores correctly.

“As people consider visiting shops… there is still concern around safety,” the RAI announced on Facebook on June 29.

“We have put together some guidelines on what retailers can do to help boost consumer confidence and ease their return.”

The RAI has also released a series of short videos on Facebook to explain its guidelines.

The RAI has also partnered with the Indira Gandhi National Open University to launch a three-year Bachelors in Business Administration (Retailing) programme, the RAI recently announced on Facebook. The programme aims to educate retail workers through distance learning whilst they remain employed and encourages retail business owners to sponsor their employees to take the course.
