Relief in Tiruppur; Tamil Nadu halts intra-state e-way bill

Tiruppur-based knitwear industrialists are relieved as the Tamil Nadu government has decided to temporarily exempt the state from intra-state e-way bill. They say as the units that handle at least 17 different processes required to manufacture a garment are spread across the district, it will become very difficult if the e-way bill is made mandatory.

In the goods and services tax (GST) regime, the Indian Government made e-way bill mandatory for transporting consignment worth above Rs 50,000 or for more than 10km. The interstate e-way bill was implemented across the country on April 1.

The South Collar Shirts and Innerwear Small Scale Manufacturers Association met state chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in February and urged him not to implement the intra-state e-way bill as that would badly affect businesses.

The industrialists want the exemption to be permanent, according to a report in a leading English-language newspaper.
