By housing Raw Mango’s clothing alongside artwork from across the country, Garg has presented his own creations as art in the brand’s new retail space. The new store is situated in a two-storey 1960s Art Deco building in Chennai’s Teynampet district and has officially opened this week, the brand announced on Facebook.

The store was designed by Garg and Adityan Melekalam of design house Squadron 14. Private areas have been created for brides-to-be to choose their wedding looks and the vintage feel of Raw Mango’s clothing is reflected in the vintage feel of the interiors.

The gallery portion of the space features an array of indigenous and eclectic art ranging from folk art from Tamil Nadu to pieces from private collections. The brand has been celebrating the rich culture of Chennai on its Facebook page and holding conversations with a number of prominent cultural, figures in the area.

“The architectural style of the original building offered interesting  possibilities to build upon,” said Melekalam, Raw Mango posted on its Facebook page. “The Art Deco details in the building were not overbearing; it was a common-ised version of Art Deco that had just enough details to suggest the original inspirations but reduced to such an extent that it blended with its surroundings and looked vernacular in parts. We related to this aspect as the confluence and coexistence of different ideas is very exciting for Raw Mango as a brand.”

Each room in the building has been restored to showcase its original tiling and the windows have been altered to let in more light. Garg plans to use the space to house various art exhibitions in future.
