Jodhpur-based traditional wear designer Raghavendra Rathore has collaborated with Mirzapur-based handwoven rug business, Obeetee, to create a collection of rugs featuring Rathore’s signature ornate designs.

Rathore and Obeetee’s collaborative collection 'Proud to be Indian' features 16 rugs in 13 different designs and mixes Rathore’s Jodhpur heritage aesthetic with Obeetee’s Rajasthani rug-making traditions. Rathore described the collection as “couture floor coverings,” on Facebook, and the rugs feature motifs found in the designer’s signature Bandhgala suits.

“Designed for a modern customer who would find the bygones era appealing, the signature of the RR designs were also conceived to encourage artisans to look at colour, techniques and concepts from a fashion point of view,” Rathore told Elle India about the collection, giving carpet design a seasonal spin, "like the cycles of fashion.”

“Rajasthan had a totally different rug culture which was making rugs for the palaces,” Obeetee’s spokesperson Rudra Chatterjee told Elle India. “So the yarns and colours were very focused on what Rajasthan would need and what Indian taste would be. We are basically tapping into that territory with this collection for celebrating the creativity and artistry of Rajasthan.”

Raghavendra Rathore launched his eponymous brand in 1994 and retails menswear and womenswear. The designer also recently opened a flagship store in Ahemdabad and launched the boutique with an event featuring celebrity Nimrat Kaur in January, 2020.
