Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for the upscaling of India’s handicraft sector to create new products, which will enable the industry to expand its distribution network.

Modi inaugurated the 51st edition of the India Handicrafts and Gifts Fair Delhi on May 19, which is being held virtually this season, ET Bureau reported. In his inauguration speech, Modi praised the country’s rich and diverse handicrafts sector and called for artisans to develop more durable and user friendly goods which would increase business, in line with the government’s ‘Make in India’ campaign.

“Generations of artisans and craftsmen from different regions have enhanced the appeal, adding colour and vibrancy to the products,” said Modi at the virtual event, the Ministry of Textiles reported in a statement.

“This edition of the virtual fair will help in giving a much needed push to the exports of handicrafts and generating additional employment in this cottage sector of Indian economy,” said textile secretary U P Singh, according to the Ministry of Textiles.

The IHGF Delhi will run online until May 23 and the event is organised by the Export Promotion Council for Handicrafts. The textile, fashion, homeware, lifestyle, and furniture trade show is taking place on a specially designed business-to-business platform, which has numerous features to connect Indian manufacturers with global buyers from over 85 countries.
