Primark to embark on the United States

Primark is studying the possibility of launching stateside after seeing impressive growth in the United Kingdom and Europe. Though British retailer Topshop seems to have secured its place in the U.S. market, other huge names such as Marks & Spencer and Tesco have failed to win the hearts of American consumers.

Allan Molloy, programme director for new markets, will be leading the project. According to the Sunday Times, entering the U.S. market is part of the company’s long-term ambition. Primark currently operates 260 stores – 160 of which are in the United Kingdom – and is present in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Holland, Germany and Austria. Continuing its expansion, the discount retailer is due to open its first store in France in December.

The Irish company is expected to post a sales increase of 22% this financial year, closed 14 September. Thanks to a warm summer season, Primark owner Associated British Foods is expecting second-half profits to beat analysts’ forecasts. For its previous financial year, the company reported £3.5 billion in revenue.
