PM Modi pushes for domestic production with 'Make In India'

As traders in numerous industries, including textiles and diamonds, face an uncertain quarter due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, PM Modi has called for a wider push towards increasing domestic production to reduce India’s dependance on other nations.

The government intends to promote numerous industries through 'Make in India' to reduce the country's trade deficit

“Today, the world is looking at India as a manufacturing powerhouse,” said Modi on March 3, the Press Trust of India reported. Modi urged industrialists to reduce imports of goods which they can procure in India itself, describing Make In India as the need of the hour.

“We should work with full force to build a robust manufacturing base,” said Modi. The Prime Minister said that Make In India represents India’s chance to prove itself on the global stage and referenced parts of the Union Budget designed to boost both the Make In India and Aatmanirbhar Bharat campaigns.

Modi also called upon businesses to promote Make In India and ‘Vocal for Local’ in their advertising campaigns, saying that India has a wealth of skilled workers to draw upon. Sectors which the government has named as particularly important to this campaign include textiles, apparel, electric vehicles, mining, and defence sectors.

Make In India was initially launched years ago to boost India’s domestic production and reduce its trade deficit in numerous industries. This sentiment has become even more pertinent since the beginning of the pandemic and now the beginning of the Ukraine conflict.
