Union Minister Piyush Goyal rallied the private cotton textile production sector to research and share knowledge on productivity, farmers’ education, and branding to boost the industry in the global market.

India's cotton industry is rips for growth, according to minister Piyush Goyal

On July 24, Goyal addressed textile business owners and industrialists to urge them to promote global best practices in the cotton industry, ET Online reported. Goyal called for an integrated approach between the private and public sectors and a collective effort to increase productivity.

“It is time for India to adopt world standards in cotton productivity,” said Goyal at a meeting with cotton textile stakeholders at New Delhi’s Vanija Bhawan, the Economic Times reported. “All stakeholders must share best practices to boost cotton productivity in India to boost farmer incomes. The private sector must contribute to boost research in productivity, farmers education, as well as branding to which [the] government would provide matching support.”

“We need to bring back our dominance in the global cotton industry and India looks at textiles as a key sector that will help us build an Aatmanirbhar Bharat,” said Goyal. To this end, Goyal said that the government is pursuing more free trade agreements with regions including the UK, EU, and Canada.

According to the minister, the central government is also working on the 5F model of ‘farm to fibre, fibre to factory, factory to fashion, fashion to foreign’ to boost the textile industry at every step and increase exports. By boosting cotton production, more jobs will also be created for citizens, according to Goyal.
