Consumers are more likely to make environmentally friendly purchases in 2020, and this is true of many fields including fashion, points out the Pinterest 100 report, which offers a glimpse of emerging trends for next year. In particular, secondhand wedding dresses have attracted the curiosity of internet users around the world with searches that increased by 41% between August 2018 and July 2019 in comparison to the same period a year earlier.

For its report, Pinterest compared the number of searches launched worldwide from August 2017 to July 2018 and August 2018 to July 2019, and identified 100 emerging trends that it divided into ten cultural themes or shifts, which correspond to the desires and new ideas piquing the curiosity of internet users around the world.

A center of attention in recent years, the trend for "conscious consumption" will continue in 2020 in the sectors of decoration, DIY and lifestyle more broadly. Fashion will continue to see consumers showing an increased interest in recycled materials, as well as secondhand and environmentally friendly clothes. Going into detail, Pinterest highlights three main trends: thrifted wedding dresses (searches up by 41%), art and creations made from ocean waste (+39%), and secondhand clothing (+38%).

Enthusiastically embraced by major ready-to-wear brands and retailers, the vogue for gender-neutral fashion has also caught the attention of consumers, who are looking for gender-neutral hair styles (+625%), unisex children's clothing (+119%) and androgynous wedding wear (+51%).

Another fashion trend that emerged in 2019, the 1990s will still be in vogue with fashion addicts next year. Internet users are particularly interested in scrunchies (+6,309%), which made a major comeback this year, hair clips (+930%), Y2K outfits featuring army pants, hip chains and logos (+669%), grunge fashion (+292%), and streetwear (+277%). This is a trend that has also had an impact in the worlds of television and music.
