Photographer Pranjal Kumar and model Surbhie travelled to a garbage dump on the outskirts of the city of Ranchi in Jharkhand for a conceptual photoshoot showing the stark contrast of the model wearing a summer dress and the mountains of rubbish piled as far as the eye can see.

The photoshoot has garnered a strong reaction on social media with many shocked at the extent of the pollution at the Jhiri garbage dump yard. Many commenters have shared that similar sites exist in their areas.

“Motive was not only to bring the issue into the notice of the people and the authorities but also to grab the attention of environmentalists at international level so that the issue of climate changes could be raised and instigate a discussion in this regard,” said fashion photographer Pranjal Kumar, Express News Service reported.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world and India bears much of the brunt of the fast-fashion industry. Consumers are becoming increasingly aware of the effects of fast fashion and other polluting industries but many businesses are continuing their unsustainable production methods.
