Paytm launches new offline payment method 'Tap to Pay'

Digital payments and e-commerce business Paytm has launched new payments feature ‘Tap to Pay’, which enables customers to pay for goods offline through their Paytm card by tapping their phone on a PoS machine.

As Covid-19 remains, digital payments aid social distancing and are thus proving popular

Paytm’s new payment method is designed to function even if the Paytm user’s phone is locked or the phone has no mobile data or internet connection, the business announced. The new Tap to Pay service works on both Android and Ios phones and the service enables users to pay for goods electronically without sharing their card details through the transaction. This is achieved through converting the user’s card 16-digit primary account number into a secured transaction code or 'digital identifier' which is shared with the PoS machine instead of the user’s card details.

“True digitisation of financial services can only happen when it is not hindered by the limitations of data,” a Paytm spokesperson said in a statement, Business Standard reported. “With the introduction of Tap to Pay, we are now enabling our users to carry out all digital transactions with or without mobile data. This service is supported by Paytm All-in-One PoS, and also by most major banks and card networks to give our users the widest range of choices.”

Paytm’s new feature can be used in all retail outlets in India which have card machines which support near field communication. The payments feature is designed to increase security and consumer confidence and decrease potential for fraud.
