Eponymous designer Payal Pratap played with floral prints and digitised hand-painted artwork for new collection ‘Java’ which debuted on the runway on March 24 at Fashion Design Council of India x Lakmé Fashion Week.

Java mixed traditional artistry with modern, digital techniques and saw Payal Pratap create three-dimensional depth and texture on fluid garments. The ancient art of Chintz printing was reimagined for a tropical get away complete with floppy hats and kaftan-esque robes.

Notable looks included oversized floral-print, floor length coat dresses, loose, relaxed suits paired with floral camisoles and baseball caps, and resortwear-style sets. The collection’s nostalgic colour palette included browns, light blues, reds, and yellows and brought to mind a French village market.

Models wore natural makeup, large hoop earrings, and neck scarves to add to the resort feel of the collection. However, the tailored details and ample amount of gowns kept the collection high impact.

The Fashion Design Council of India x Lakmé Fashion Week runs from March 23 to 27 in New Delhi and is the first physical edition of the collaborative fashion week. All fashion shows are held on the runway and also broadcast on the organisers’ respective social media accounts.
