Leading Indian ayurveda and FMCG firm Patanjali is looking to cash in on the khadi boom in the country by venturing into the khadi segment with its own ‘swadeshi’ line by end of this year.

Patanjali had earlier announced that it will enter the apparel business this year with the launch of its apparel brand Paridhan which will retail garment products, including ethnic wear, sportswear, accessories, catering to kids, men and women.

Patanjali was expected to open 100 exclusive brand outlets for Paridhan across the country this year. However, the usage of the word 'khadi' by Patanjali, which is a trademark owned by government’s Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is a hint that the company may tie up with KVIC for its apparel products.

“Patanjali plans to launch 100 exclusive retail outlets to sell its ‘swadeshi’ line of branded khadi clothes by Diwali this year. We will sell khadi products including kurtis, suits and jackets at the Patanjali Khadi outlets to be opened by November, specifically in tier 2 and tier 3 cities,” Acharya Balkrishna, chief executive officer of Patanjali Ayurveda, told ThePrint

Reacting on the statement by Patanjali, KVIC Chairman, V K Saxena, said, “Any company that plans to sell khadi products needs to take permission from KVIC. As of now, I have no information about Patanjali’s plans. We, however, welcome them into the industry.”

Patanjali is a leading player in the country’s cosmetic and food market and a total revenue of around 9,000 crore rupees (approx $1.3 billion US) for the FY 2017.
