Personal care brand Patanjali has again caused controversy with the Indian Medical Association accusing the firm's founder, Ramdev, of defaming scientific medicine in a recent video. The business has denied the claims.

Patanjali’s founder Ramdev has caused controversy with recent statements - Patanjali Paridhan

The IMA urged the Union Health Ministry to take action against Ramdev after viewing a video circulating online of the Patanjali head calling allopathic medicine “ek aisi stupid aur diwalilya science" (a “stupid science”), ET Bureau reported.

On May 22, the Patanjali Yogpeeth Trust issued a statement that brand founder Ramdev has “utmost regards” for doctors and staff who have been working tirelessly during the pandemic. The organisation said that, in the viral video, Ramdev was, “reading out a forwarded WhatsApp message received by him and various other members who were participating in the event,” the Press Trust of India reported.

Since the pandemic began, Patanjali has faced a number of controversies. The brand launched an Ayurvedic medicine named ‘Coronil’ last year, which it was claiming cures coronavirus.

The brand had also claimed that its Coronil medicine had received certification from the Ayush Ministry as part of the WHO’s certification scheme in February 2021. However, the WHO swiftly clarified on its Twitter account that it has not given any endorsement to the products.
