After the Lok Sabha had already approved the Consumer Protection Bill 2019, the Upper House gave its approval to the bill through a voice vote on Tuesday, the Press Trust of India reported. The bill seeks to establish adequate authorities to deal with the administration and settlement of consumer disputes in a timely and effective manner.

The bill also aims to strengthen consumer rights which should in turn lead to more consumer trust in the retail industry. A complaints redressal mechanism is also proposed in the bill to enable consumers to have a clear pathway to address complaints over quality of goods and services.

As Parliament held a debate on the bill, the Consumer Affairs Minister Ramvilas Paswan said that suggestions given on the bill by members would be included in it by the Ministry.

Recent consumer complaints over customers being charged for branded carry bags and fake goods have been prevalent in the Indian retail sector. The bill aims to streamline the consumer complaints process to ensure that such complaints are handled correctly.
