Modi met with 11 delegates from the textile industry in Coimbatore on December 27, to glean information on issues facing the industry. The delegates shared that there was a need for a focus on exports and related incentives.

“Tirupur Exporters' Association thanks our Hon'ble Prime Minister calling for a meeting with Textile delegation on 27th December 2019 to know the plight of Textile Industry,” the TEA announced on Facebook, on December 28.

“Highlighted the issues related with Basel Norms, risky exporter and refund of incentives. Hope [this will] get addressed soon," it added.

The meeting was the first time the Prime Minister had met with a group of textiles-only delegates, TEA president Raja M Shanmugham, told the Press Trust of India, thanking Modi. Growth and the importance of the Tirupur cluster was highlighted at the meeting, the Press Trust of India reported.

The Union Government has focused on boosting textile production and exports, especially of handloom weaves, as part of its “Make in India” campaign.

India faces increased competition in the textile export market from countries including Bangladesh and Vietnam, and the government is working on making the Indian textile sector more sustainable and competitive.
