Online sales may touch Rs 30000 cr in October, says ASSOCHAM

Consumers are increasingly opting for online shopping for electronic gadgets, consumer durables, apparel, home appliances and gift items for the festival of Diwali and the sale this October may touch Rs 30,000 crore compared to Rs 22,000 crore in the same month last year, says a survey by the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM).

The survey, conducted by ASSOCHAM’s the national council on e-commerce of in 10 cities — Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Chennai, Bangalore, Chandigarh and Dehradun, shows online shopping industry in India is fast catching on, not just in the big metros but also in the tier II and tier III cities, according to an ASSOCHAM press release.

The respondents included 350 professionals, officers and executives across various industry sectors including manufacturing, real estate, automobile, healthcare, retail and hospitality.

The survey shows 35 per cent of regular shoppers are in the 18-25 age group, 55 per cent between 26 and 35, 8 per cent between 36 and 45 and 2 per cent are aged between 45 and 60. Sixty five per cent of online shoppers are male.

Of the products sold online, mobile phones comprise 78 per cent, electronic gadgets 72 per cent , consumer durables 69 per cent, gift items 58 per cent, accessories 56 per cent , apparel 49 per cent, and home appliances 45 per cent.

There has been a five-fold increase in ordering through e-commerce as compared to last year, the survey adds.
