ONDC launches beta operations in Meerut

The Open Network for Digital Commerce’s Beta version has gone live in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. The launch marks the first Tier 2 city targeted for the e-commerce network expansion of ONDC and is part of a learning phase before it rolls out across India. 

ONDC is now open for both buyers and sellers in Meerut, the network announced in a media release. Meerut was chosen as the first Tier 2 city to test ONDC in because it has a high density of online sellers.
 
“Starting from Bengaluru, we’re excited to expand ONDC Beta to Meerut, given the existing number of sellers already adopting ONDC here,” said ONDC CEO and managing director T Koshy, ET Retail reported. “We hope that with the Beta rollout today, more sellers and local businesses will join ONDC in Meerut, and will pave the way for bringing the vision of Vocal4Local to reality in Uttar Pradesh and across India.” 

Following its ‘Alpha’ rollout in April, ONDC began its beta testing in Bengaluru in September this year and has subsequently worked on making buyers, sellers, and logistics applications live on ONDC. The aims of ONDC is to form a set of specifications to encourage open and unbundled networks for e-commerce to bring large and small sellers on to a level playing field.
