Nirav Modi to appear in UK court as authorities prepare for extradition trial

Published
Jan 3, 2020

Jewellery tycoon Nirav Modi was ordered to appear before a UK court again on January 30, as he awaits his upcoming extradition trial in May for alleged fraud at the Punjab National Bank.

Nirav Modi will appear in court in the UK again on January 30 - Nirav Modi- Facebook

At a case management hearing on January 2, Westminster Magistrates' court deputy chief magistrate, Tan Ikram, ordered Modi to remain in custody until a further hearing on January 30, the Press Trust of India reported.

Modi appeared at the hearing via a video-link to his cell in Wandsworth Prison, London, where he has been held since his arrest on March 19, 2019.

Modi has also been banned from further appealing the court’s refusal to grant him bail after his last appeal in November, 2019. The UK Crown Prosecution Service, which represents the Indian government in Modi’s extradition proceedings, named him as the "principal beneficiary" of the Rs 13,500 crore ($2 billion) fraud and also stated that there is no further prospect of a bail appeal.

Modi’s extradition trial is scheduled to begin on May 11 and is expected to last five days. The trial will decide if Modi should be extradited to India to stand trial for his accused fraud. However, if the courts do decide to extradite him, a lengthy appeal process will still be open to Modi.

The jeweller denies all accusations of fraud, as does his uncle and fellow accused, Mehul Choksi.

As the promoter of Gitanjali Gems, Choksi is also accused of defrauding the PNB and, like Modi, fled India before news of the scandal broke in the media.

Indian authorities are working to extradite Choksi from Antigua where he is believed to be residing and has taken citizenship.
