Nirav Modi has been held at Wandsworth Prison in south-west London since his third bail application was rejected by Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot at a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on May 8. Modi will next stand before Judge Arbuthnot for what will be the first hearing in his extradition case. The case could take many months, no matter the decision of the first hearing, as the UK has an appeal process for extradition cases.

Modi was denied bail three times by Westminster Magistrates' Court which is the limit to how many times an accused can file for bail. Modi was deemed a flight risk taking into account the serious nature of his alleged crime, taking part in a fraud totalling over Rs 13,500 crore ($2 billion) along with his uncle and fellow jeweller, Mehul Choksi

After being arrested on March 19 in London, Modi has maintained his innocence and stated that he does not wish to return to India. The Enforcement Directorate and Central Bureau of Investigation are representing Indian government authorities in the UK in Modi’s extradition case.
