Modi’s remand in prison in the UK has been extended until July 25 at a hearing at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Thursday, the Press Trust of India reported. Modi appeared in the hearing via a video-link to the prison where he is being detained. The remand decision follows three bail pleas and one high court bail appeal, all of which have been denied.

Modi, who is being held by UK authorities on the request of the Indian Enforcement Directorate as he is the main defendant in the Punjab National Bank fraud case, will remain in prison as he awaits his first extradition hearing. Indian authorities will make their case in a UK court to have Modi extradited from the UK to India to stand trial. Indian authorities must convince the court that Modi will be treated humanely should he be detained in India.

The UK Crown Prosecution Service will represent the Indian government at the upcoming hearing on July 29 and has until July 11 to present its opening position statement for the hearing. The hearing at the end of July will set out a timeline for Modi’s extradition trial.
