Nirav Modi's extradition trial recommences in London, UK

Published
Sep 7, 2020

Jeweller Nirav Modi’s extradition trial has recommenced in London, UK, as Indian authorities attempt to extradite Modi to India to stand trial for alleged fraud at the Punjab National Bank.

Nirav Modi, the promoter for his eponymous jewellery brand, is accused of leading one of the highest value frauds in India's banking history - Nirav Modi- Facebook

After the first part of his extradition trial was postponed, due in part to the coronavirus pandemic, Modi will once again appear via video link for a trial at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London, TNN reported. The five-day trial, scheduled to conclude on September 11, will address the second repatriation request made by the Government of India, as well as the delayed first request from Modi’s trial back in May.

In their extradition request, Indian authorities have accused Modi of interfering in a Central Bureau of Information probe by intimidating witnesses and sending death threats. Modi, who will remain in Wandsworth Prison as the trial takes place and watch proceedings via a video-link, will not personally give evidence.

The verdict of the two extradition requests made against Modi will be announced after final oral submissions are presented on December 1. If the court does rule to extradite Modi, an appeal process will be open to him.

Modi is accused of leading a fraud at the PNB valued at around Rs 14,000 crore ($2 billion). Indian authorities are also working to extradite Modi’s uncle and fellow accused jewellery tycoon, Mehul Choksi, from Antigua where is is believed to be residing.
