“In some time from now, NIFT Bhubaneswar campus will be the only institution in the world where students can see the entire sustainable fashion value chain from farm to fashion,” NIFT Bhubaneswar’s director Binay Bhusan Jena told the Times of India.

“This would give a tremendous boost to our handloom and Khadi sector. We are going to have agriculture units on campus.”

The large-scale plan involves setting up research and development laboratories for natural fabrics and dyes inside the NIFT campus, which would be used to teach students about sustainable production.

The institution has already created a 2.5 acre plantation on its campus as a natural dye garden. Around 60 local and natural plants that can be used to dye textiles have been identified and the institue has worked with the Khadi and Village Industries Corporation to keep bees to pollinate the plants.

The institute has also taken measures to make the running of the campus more environmentally friendly. Eco-friendly dustbins made from recycled bamboo have been installed throughout the campus and chemical fertilisers are no longer used in the area. NIFT Bhubaneswar has also petitioned the central government for help on the project.
