At the first full day of fashion shows of the Fashion Design Council of India and Lakme Fashion Week joint event on October 6, ‘The Spotlight’ featured presentations by Naushad Ali and Swgt with sponsor Nexa.

The Spotlight showcase, designed to highlight up-and-coming talent, featured brands Naushad Ali and Swgt this season. Both brands presented their latest collections with evocative fashion films; Naushad Ali favouring a retro aesthetic and Swgt taking inspiration from the mountains and the spirit of adventure.

Naushad Ali’s collection launched with a dreamy black and white film evoking a romantic view of rural life. With a vintage aesthetic and poetic simplicity, the collection mixed nostalgia with wearable garments.

Checked textiles, loose tailoring, and traditional fabrics celebrated India’s craft heritage and showed how it is still relevant today. The men’s and womenswear collection also had hints of school uniform and loungewear.

Swgt’s fashion film began with a panorama of dramatic mountains, zooming in to find a model amongst the trees. The dense jungle provided a backdrop for Swgt’s ruffled bonnets, asymmetric layers, and delicate detailing. As a model wandered through a mountain river, the wind blew gracefully through the sheer layers of her slate-hued dress.

The dramatic landscape contrasted with the subtle, almost fragile garments and the two were tied together through a colour palette of greens, greys, ice blues, and white. Stripes, delicate beaded details, and hats with brims resembling flower petals also made an appearance.

FDCI x LFW’s second joint edition runs until October 10 and showcases are broadcast on the FDCI’s website as well as its social media handles. As well as Nexa, the fashion week counts businesses including TresEmme, Trell, Ajio, and Rise Worldwide as sponsors and also includes a range of business-to-business shopping features for buyers including a Virtual Showroom.
