New-in fashion drives John Lewis sales upwards

The weather may still have been very cold but UK shoppers were in a springtime frame of mind in the seven days to January 21 as fashion helped John Lewis to a healthy sales rise.

The omnichannel retailer said that in the week when it began introducing spring/summer ranges, total sales were £77.4m, up 4.9% year on year.

Spring colours helped boost fashion sales at John Lewis last week

Fashion sales rose 3.5% and its own brand spring/summer clothing ranges proved popular after they went on sale last week. Overall sales of womenswear were up 16.2% as the transitional styles that characterise the early spring drops added a touch of colour to dull winter wardrobes while also taking into account the low temperatures.

But despite the fashion boost, Home was the strongest category with sales up 9.5%. This was good news with Home having been slower in recent weeks and was partly due to the clearance sale. Clearance has ended in other categories, but always continues until the end of January in Home.

Last week offers on furniture led to sales in this category rising 17.9% higher than in the same week last year.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up only 2.6% year-on-year but communications technology products were up 10.8%, driven by demand for audio products such as portable speakers, headphones and radios, and mobile phones. Sales of Apple’s iPhone surged 58% and Android phones even managed to beat that with a 76% leap.
