NIFT’s Tirupur institute will hold an orientation on July 26 for its new scheme to facilitate the training of workers in the apparel manufacturing industry. The institute has set up a training centre to work alongside the Scheme for Capacity Building in Textile Sector, “Samarth”, which is run by the government.

“As an average 20 percent employees either jumps to other units or stop working in the apparel cluster, the units would have to find new employees often,” NIFT TEA college’s head of training centre K J Sivagnanam told TNN about the reason behind the programme. “Getting new skilled employees isn’t an easy task.”

NIFT and the government will work together under the new scheme. “Apart from technical support, which would be provided by the NIFT-TEA training centre, the government would provide Rs 12,000 [$173.96] per trainee on an average,” said Sivagnanam.

According to the Ministry of Textiles’ website, the Samarth scheme aims to train 10 lakh workers in apparel manufacture from 2017 to 2020. The government has allocated Rs 1,300 crore to the scheme.
