"Government of India is committed to expeditious extradition of Nirav Modi," said Kumar at a media briefing, as reported by the Press Trust of India. "There was no delay which can be attributed to our side. There were certain processes which had to be completed, and that is how he was arrested."

However, as Indian authorities are pushing for Modi’s speedy extradition, Modi’s lawyers are expected to make a second application for bail at his hearing on March 29, as reported by TNN.

Ben Keith, a barrister specialising in extradition cases, told TNN on March 22 that he expects that Modi will be granted bail. “I am surprised he was not given bail. He was arrested unexpectedly so may not have had the bail security ready,” said Keith.

Modi’s bail was denied as he was deemed a flight risk. However, Keith argued that Modi is unlikely to attempt to escape due to the Red Corner Notice issued against him. If Modi attempts to cross an international border, he will be arrested.

Modi was arrested on March 19 in London, UK after British authorities received information on the fraud chase against him from the Enforcement Directorate. Modi is accused along with his Uncle and fellow jeweller Mehul Choksi In orchestrating a Rs 14,000 crore ($2 billion) fraud at the Punjab National Bank.
