Minister Smriti Irani champions women fashion entrepreneurs at 66th Commission on the Status of Women

Union Minister for Women and Child Development Smriti Irani announced that women are an indispensable part of India’s growth journey and put fashion entrepreneurs front and centre at the 66th Commission on the Status of Women.

Women entrepreneurs are leading India’s innovation for a sustainable future in industries including sustainable fashion and circular economy, Irani said on March 21, Business Standard reported. Irani addressed international dignitaries at an online side event of the Commission on the Status of Women titled ‘A world we women and girls want: Lifestyle for the environment’ and said that the Indian government is committed to supporting these women entrepreneurs. 
 
Speaking about climate change, Irani said that India is committed to fulfilling its commitments made under the UN Framework Convention on Cliamte Change. Irani also highlighted that the country’s carbon footprint per capita is 60% lower than the global average.

The 66th edition of the Commission on the Status of Women runs from March 14 to 25 with a hybrid online-offline format, according to the UN Women website.

The events are attended by representatives of UN member states, UN entities, and accredited NGOs from across the world. The event’s primary theme this year is, “achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls in the context of climate change, environmental and disaster risk reduction policies and programmes,” UN Women announced on its website.
