Minister for Textiles Piyush Goyal has urged India’s textiles industry to adopt advanced technologies for high-yielding cotton seeds. The Union Government Minister sees technology as the way to boost the country’s cotton production.
In order for India to increase its cotton productivity, it needs a steady supply of good quality seeds, said Goyal, the Times of India reported. By using advanced technologies, the industry should be able to innovate high-yielding cotton seeds and create high-density planting systems to boost production, according to the Textiles Minister.
Goyal announced that he wants the Indian textile industry to self-regulate for branding and certifying the country's cotton as ‘Kasturi Cotton’, ET Bureau reported. The government will match any industry funds for the initiative, according to Goyal. A meeting with the Textile Advisory Group on November 7 to discuss the initiative.
“The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry will take up this project in mission mode with distribution support from Cotton Corporation of India Limited,” said the Ministry of Textiles in a statement, the Times of India reported. “Industry associations and industry leaders together agreed to fund 75,000 hand held kapas plucker machines. Additionally, FPOs may be actively involved to empower cotton farmers.”
