Seeing India as an important market for growth, Metro Cash & Carry will launch five stores across Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana in 2020, the business’ India managing director and CEO Arvind Mediratta told the Press Trust of India.

“The company thinks India is a big growth market,” said Mediratta. “The opportunity for growth in India is huge in both physical stores and e-commerce.”

The business has seen a profit in India for its past two financial years. As part of its expansion plans for the country, it has launched a ‘Smart Kirana Programme’ and partnered with around 2,000 Kirana stores in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Bengaluru for retail.

Metro has provided the Kirana stores with point of sale devices which feature a Metro app that allows store owners to order goods from Metro online and get sales reports. The device also facilitates card payments.

Metro Cash & Carry, also known as Metro Wholesale India, retails a wide range of fast moving consumer goods including clothing, luggage, cosmetics, personal care goods, and accessories as well as groceries.

The German-based business entered the Indian market in 2003, according to its Facebook page, and operates in 17 cities including Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Jalandhar, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Pune, Vijayawada, Zirakpur, and Meerut.
