Menswear designer Jenjum Gadi launches saree line
Menswear specialist Jenjum Gadi will launch his first capsule collection of patchwork women’s sarees this month, as well as a collection of kaftans, as the designer moves towards more targeted collections.
“I only do menswear but this March I am coming out with my first-ever capsule collection of patchwork sariee,” Gadi told the Times of India. “I have used kala cotton and kept it extremely minimalistic– close to my design aesthetic. I have even designed a line of kaftans that will be available only in Taj Rishikesh. The market is still slow, so I am only releasing capsule collections and experimenting with smaller, targeted collections.”
Gadi also recently designed the uniforms for the Delhi Police’s first-ever all-women pipe band. The uniforms features Gadi’s own take on classic uniforms.
Based in Delhi, Jenjum Gadi hails from Arunachal Pradesh and is inspired by his Northeastern heritage. This year, the designer plans to continue to work with and promote Northeastern handloom textiles.
“I really want to work with the loin looms of the Northeast and promote it in a big way,” said Gadi. “While on other looms you can weave nine to 15 metres at one go, here you can’t go more than one to two meters. Whatever you make will have a joint and the design has to be minimal waste. Also, most people have started using acrylics but I want to work with cotton.”
Jenjum Gadi’s eponymous brand retails from a range of multi-brand e-commerce stores including Tata Cliq Luxury and Carma Online.
