Fashion designer and entrepreneur Masaba Gupta has made her acting debut in a new Netflix original series about her life titled ‘Masaba Masaba’.
Gupta’s new Netflix India series, based on her life and career, launched on the streaming service on August 28, Gupta announced on her Facebook page. In the series, Gupta stars as a fictional version of herself along with her mother, actress Neena Gupta. Over the course of six episodes, viewers are given a fictional glimpse into the designer’s work and home life.
The series was conceptualised by producer Ashvini Yardi two years ago and later filmed over 31 days. Directed by Sonam Nair, Masaba Masaba episodes feature characters based on real people in Gupta’s life from her childhood to the present day.
The show has a light-hearted feel at times but also touches on more series topics including plagiarism in the fashion industry.
“Plagiarism is something that people tend to take very lightly- it exists at such a mass level that no one person can control,” Gupta told Vogue India, about how the show handles the issue.
“I don't think the consumers understand how everything you do in fashion costs money, like copyrighting… you can't control the copy market. More importantly, people don't perceive fashion as serious business, which we have addressed on the show.”
Gupta also told Vogue India that she hopes the series will inspire other girls and women to follow their dreams, especially by seeing someone “who looks like me,” on the screen.
Sharing that she had aspired to be an actress as a child, Gupta’s foray into acting will no doubt also further increase the reach of her fashion and lifestyle brand, House of Masaba.
