From March 4, Martin Shankland will join the board of directors of the Adidas group. Shankland joined the German sport brand in 1997, and oversaw its expansion in Russia and the neighbouring markets. From 2017, he was in charge of emerging markets development, a division comprising notably the Middle East, Turkey, India and Africa.

Shankland’s new role within the board of directors is to head global operations. The position had been held since 2017 by Gil Steyaert, formerly the group’s managing director for western Europe, who will be leaving the world’s second-largest sport group after a career spanning 20 years.

Australia-born Shankland, 47, enjoys triathlon and will have the opportunity to show his ability to post a string of convincing performances. His mission, according to Igor Landau, chairman of Adidas’s supervisory board, will be to “continue to execute [the group’s] long-term ‘Creating the New’ strategy successfully.”

The Adidas group, owner of the eponymous brand and of Reebok, is forecasting a revenue rise of between 8% and 9% for the 2018 financial year, whose results will be published on March 13. In 2017, the group generated a revenue of €21 billion.
