Finland-based design company Marimekko Corporation has joined hands with fibre technology company Spinnova to develop and market wood-based textiles. With its expertise in the fashion and textile industry, Marimekko has extended support to Spinnova in developing and commercialising textiles made with pulp-based fibre spun with Spinnova’s technology.

Spinnova converts pulp directly into textile fibre without chemical solvents. The manufacturing of textile fibre spun with Spinnova’s method consumes some 99 per cent less water than cotton production, according to the brand.

"We believe that cooperation between the textile industry and innovative companies such as Spinnova is the key in bringing new materials to the market. We have been involved in material research for years and have paid close attention to developments in this area. It is great to see that such globally significant expertise and technology needed for material development exist in Finland," said Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko, president and chief executive officer of Marimekko.
