The designer, who recently showed his cocktail collection, Tales of Indulgence, at Lakmé Fashion Week, designed the costumes for Mughal-e-Azam and used the opportunity to create luxurious traditional pieces. The musical is currently playing at the Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor Statium and is based on a film of the same name by K. Asif. The musical tells the tale of Prince Salim and his love for the courtesan Anarkali and involves large scale song and dance numbers.

Malhotra spoke of his eagerness to get involved in the production and said: “For me it was very exciting because it is the first time I was doing a period drama and for the first time I was doing a theatrical play.” Malhotra also elaborated on his designs and said: “I must say it again that we have done everything from the heart. There are layers of fabric, whether it’s been silk, Kota, Zardosi embroidery, brocades, Bandini, [or] velvet, everything is pure and rich in display.”

Along with having the freedom to bring the production’s characters to life, Malhotra also had the responsibility of creating garments that not only looked striking but were also stage- appropriate. Malhotra explained how he had to modify the structure of his designs from his normal catwalk fare and said: “The linings used in the outfits for the artistes is much lighter. The entire thing is on Velcro. Velcro had to be dyed to the colour of the outfits because in a second you have to change. Someone is wearing a kurta inside then there is Sherwani and then something else inside.”
