Malini Ramani to shut down womenswear brand
Jun 23, 2020
Designer Malini Ramani has decided to shut down her eponymous womenswear brand after close to a quarter century in the Indian fashion industry.
“There is a bittersweet feeling of saying goodbye to something that has been part of my every breath for the last 20 years,” Malini wrote on her Instagram page.
Ramani is currently winding-down operations at her brand’s factory and creating look books for what will be her clearance stock of final designs, she told Vogue India.
“I’ve had an amazing time doing this,” Ramani told Vogue India. “But my interests have been moving in a different direction for some time now… I love fashion, but who decided you can’t love something else too? Some things run their course. It’s time for the next chapter.”
Ramani also cited a drop in demand for party wear during lockdown, which her brand specialised in, as a reason for her decision to shut down the brand. “The business is changing, and it felt like the right time to move on.”
Ramani has been posting about her spiritual journey and becoming a Kundalini yoga teacher on her Instagram and plans to pursue spiritual growth and take a break. She plans to spend time in Rishikesh and learn, “new techniques of healing, meditation, and sound baths,” she told Vogue India, advising young designers not to pressure themselves too much and keep happiness as their focus.
Malini Ramani’s womenswear brand retails from its dedicated e-commerce store which is currently closed due to lockdown, a message on the site reads. The brand specialises in bohemian style occasion wear with a feminine aesthetic.
