The Maharashtra state government’s cooperation, marketing and textile department has proposed to start a textile university at Harpur in south Nagpur. It will be the first of its kind in the country if the proposal is accepted, according to state textiles secretary Atul Patne.

Courses on power loom, handloom, spinning mills, silk and hosiery will be started.

The Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) has been appointed the nodal agency for planning and construction of the university, to be developed on the State Handloom Corporation’s two-acre land, according to a report in a top Indian newspaper.

As 80 per cent of power loom industries in India are situated in Maharashtra, a textile university in the state will encourage the sector to a great extent, added Patne.
