American group Macy’s, owner of both Macy’s and Bloominsdale’s department store chains, has decided to greatly expand its e-commerce business. With a 29% growth in online sales in the first 10 months of fiscal 2010 compared to 2009, the group has announced plans to develop its organisation in order to support the fast growth of its online businesses, in particular that of macys.com and bloomingdales.com.

“These expansions to macys.com and bloomingdales.com represent investments in merchandising, marketing, and site development, which complement ongoing improvements in systems infrastructure, fulfilment capacity and customer service”, said Terry J. Lundgren, president of Macy’s Inc. The company expects the new expansion to create 725 new positions throughout its New York, San Francisco and Atlanta sites, which should add nearly 3,500 full-time, part-time and seasonal holiday associates in the next two years. Macy’s fiscal 2009 sales reached $23.5 billion and the group currently operates 850 department stores in the United States.
