The production of silk from the country is also expected to go up post this announcement. Silk production has already increased by 41 percent since 2013-14.

The country’s silk production is further expected to go up in the coming years and reach about 38,500 tonnes by 2020 from the current level of 32,000 tonnes.

“Silk is a strong commodity and there is a huge demand for it in the international markets. I assure you that the ministry of external affairs will become a facilitating ministry" to take silk to global markets,” External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said at textile ministry function Surging Silk, PTI reported.

The Surging Silk event was organised by the Ministry of Textiles, in association with Central Silk Board in New Delhi to highlight the growth of the silk industry in India over the past four years.

India is the second-largest producer of silk in the world. The silk industry is agriculture based and labour intensive and provides gainful employment to around 8 million artisans and weavers in rural areas.
