Loulou des Indes to expand project to support weaving communities in India
The Berlin-based French brand Loulou des Indes is working to support weaving communities in India and tapping into the possibilities of social media to expand their operations.
Loulou des Indes by Daphné Ghesquière is currently in the process of scaling up their operations in India. For the brand’s upcoming collection, the aim is to greatly increase production at their atelier in Delhi which produces garments by hand using handloom textiles. In order to increase production, and subsequently distribution, the brand is running a social media and Kickstarter campaign to raise funds. If the brand reaches its goal of around 15,000 US dollars the it will produce a collection far larger than its previous ones and aims to move on from direct selling to a wider distribution network.
The children’s wear brand uses handwoven textiles in their designs to create clothing that is a fusion between French and Indian aesthetics.
“Handwoven textiles are perfectly suited for kidswear,” stated Ghesquière in the brand’s fundraising statement that explains that the brand is as much about sustainability as it is about fashion.
“Today, mass production and the nearly complete industrialisation of textile manufacturing are threatening weaving communities in India,” said Ghesquière, who has worked with textile producers in India for over five years. “Villages where weaving used to be a thriving activity are deserted. Centuries-old weaving skills are disappearing and a significant part of the world’s cultural heritage is lost with them.” The brand’s upcoming collection is inspired by the 1930s Indian artist Amrita Sher-Gil and, if the fundraising goal is reached, production in India is set to increase greatly.
