L’Oreal wins largest share in urban hair colour market
L’Oreal has overtaken Godrej and gained the top market share of the urban hair colour market, but Godrej remains the main player in the mass-end market.
L’Oreal SA overtook Godrej Consumer Products last year to hold the largest share in the urban hair colour market, spurred on by its most successful product both in India and globally, its Garnier Black Naturals brand. L’Oreal now holds 25.8 percent of the urban hair colour market compared to Godrej’s share of 24 percent. In 2017, the figures were reversed with Godrej holding a 26.3 percent market share and L’Oreal holding 25.3 percent, according to data from Nielsen.
“We have an advantage in terms of value of L’Oréal Paris and also the whole salon channel, but Godrej has done a brilliant job of creating that category,” L’Oreal India’s managing director Amit Jain told ET Bureau.
“India is becoming a hub for reverse innovation into our other high-growth markets on a formulation and developmental aspect,” Jain elaborated, stating that India has become a major part of the brand’s global business.
L’Oreal also currently controls over 70 percent of the urban salon market in India. The brand does retail products in the value section of the market but remains predominantly in the premium segment. Godrej, still the main business in the mass-end market, is also looking to add more premium products to its portfolio. Aiming to capitalise on India’s growing middle class, L’Oreal hopes to attract the demographic to the brand with aspirational products moving forward.
