KVIC to promote khadi programmes in northeast India

The Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) is looking to promote various programmes and schemes to improve the livelihood of artisans, weavers, and spinners with focus on northeast states in the country.

KVIC recently launched various programs north-eastern regions of the country that included opening of a bamboo mat cluster in West Tripura and new building under SFURTI (scheme for fund for regeneration of traditional industries).

The production of khadi in the north-eastern region during 2021-22 was Rs 13 crore ($1.6 million) and the sale was Rs 16 crore which provided employment to 5,827 people.

Commenting on the initiative, Manoj Kumar, chairman of KVIC in a statement said, “Several efforts are being undertaken to promote KVIC programmes to develop the handloom and handicraft sector in hilly and border areas.”

“The priority of KVIC is to create additional employment opportunities in the country through various programs and schemes to make dreams come true of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. We must contribute our full towards realizing his dream, so that more and more artisans, spinners, and weavers associated with this sector may earn respectable remuneration,” he added.

KVIC has been launching several initiatives to promote khadi across the globe and claims that in the last financial year (2021-22) it crossed revenue of Rs 1.15 lakh crore.
