Designer Kunal Rawal made his couture debut at India Couture Week with a digital showcase on Tuesday. Rawal’s menswear collection was titled ‘Hide and Seek’.
Kunal Rawal’s digital showcase for the Fashion Design Council of India’s first-ever digital edition of its India Couture Week made a strong statement. The collection, which focused on traditional and fusion wear, had a mix of looks ranging from heavily embellished pastel ensembles to bold, bright graphic looks.
Filmed by Naik Prasad, the showcase was set at the Asiatic Society, Mumbai State Central Library, a Greco-Roman style building complete with columns and a full white-wash. The camera panned to show the busy surrounding streets and the contrast between the illustrious building and bustling alleyways reflected the contrast of Rawal’s couture designs paired with combat boots.
“This collection celebrates my love for textures,” Rawal told the FDCI and announced on his brand’s Facebook page. “You’ll find a whole bunch of thread work in the form of french knots, something that has become signature to our brand.”
The collection also featured deconstruction and mock layering with the idea that garments can be worn multiple ways. Close-up shots revealed the immense amount of detailed work in the collection and took advantage of the digital medium.
“I love the thought of digital couture,” Rawal added. “I think the pandemic and the world we live in today, it’s very important to keep your ears to the ground and evolve quickly. I think FDCI is doing that beautifully.”
