Knitwear hub Tiruppur sees strong growth in January, spurs hopes of recovery

Knitwear production hub Tiruppur has seen an uptick in business in January, signalling a reversal of months of negative growth caused by the pandemic and global conflict. Spinning mills in the area are busier each week and this trend is expected to continue.

Tiruppur's mills are confident that growth will continue in the coming months

“Exports came down between July and December 2022,” said the Tiruppur Exporters Association’s president K M Subramanian, the Press Trust of India reported. “The three month average negative growth will be 24%. However, from January it has increased marginally. I would say in dollar terms a 2% rise while in rupee it is 11%.”

Spinning mills in Tiruppur were recently shitting down for a few days a week as there was not sufficient demand to keep them running every day. Now, the mills are being operated daily due to increased orders which also spells more security for industry workers dependent on the mills running.

“Since large traders in this industrial belt are micro, small, and medium enterprise units, they largely depend on orders from Europe,” said Subramanian. “They were largely hit due to the impact caused by the pandemic and the Russia- Ukraine conflict. Now there is a positive sign with the industry witnessing a 1.5% growth in January.”
